Cats are very much like humans , they show a whole range of emotions just like their owners.
If your cat is feeling frightened or angry you will know just by looking at them. Their pupils will be larger than normal, and the ears will be flattened against the head, the tail will swish around and thump on the ground.
Summarisation
A cat shows if it is unhappy by a whole range of physical emotions and messages. I refer frequently to my own cat Marley during this article. I`m sure this article will help you communicate on a higher level with your pet cat.

Kitten Communication
When your kitten is trying to communicate it will be obvious to you,for example if a kitten is lost, cold or frightened, they will let out a high pitch meow. If they are fighting with one of their siblings and losing the fight, the mew will be a lot louder and more pronounced. The adult cat
will use a short high pitched meow when they are trying to let you know something is wrong. The high pitched meow will alert you at once if they have been shut in a room or cupboard and want you to rescue them. My cat Marley meows this way when she's found that a door has shut behind her and she wants to be in the same room as I am. If a cat flicks a tongue over their lips quickly they are usually feeling puzzled and unhappy. If a cat has heard a noise that they don't like this is usually their response, and will crouch low ready to flee away from the source. You can judge your cat`s mood by just sitting and observing them, look at the ears! eyes and whiskers! What are they doing? If you see your cat come face to face with a cat they don`t like or a dog! You will notice that the cats ears will turn back, head will sway from side to side and they won`t take their eyes off the enemy, the whiskers will be fanned out against their face expecting a fight, very soon, and the back will be arched and the fur standing upright along the cat`s back. When a cat is not sure of what to do and is feeling anxious you will notice them poised with front legs straight and back legs bent reflecting their feelings of anxiousness. If the danger ie; the neighbourhood cat or dog is close by, you will see your cat crouching down with both sets ,front and back legs bent. When you have to tell your cat off for scratching furniture etc, notice how their ears twitch rapidly, this is a sign of nervous response to the situation and of being told off! A typical anxious cat moment will mimic itself by their fur standing up,ears back, showing anxiety and stress and the tail being held in a loop like a witches cat.Summarisation

Your cat has a variety of ways that they use to let you know if they are happy or sad.If their ears are pricked up they are alert and showing interest in what is going on around them.you will find whiskers are pointing out to the sides of the face either bunched or fanned out this means that puss is feeling contented and comfortable. A cat will say Hello to their owner by having the tailed raised up, and will flip the tail as a sign of greeting.
a confident cat will roll over ( they love carpet) showing his tummy in passive mode. A less sure cat will just flop him or herself down at your feet for attention.
when a cat is totally happy they will purr loudly. usually the louder the purr the happier the cat is. when it is feeding time your cat /kitten will not let you forget by rubbing themself around your feet and meowing loudly! Your cat is also marking you as their property by using their scent glands beneath the chin and forehead.
Cats greet their owners when they are pleased to see them by doing a little hop with both front paws raised a few inches above the ground and doing a little chirping cry.
When cats jump onto your lap and start padding with their paws they are mimicking when they were a kitten they had to pummel their mothers tummy to stimulate the flow of milk and this habit goes on into adult life of a cat.
